Parma is the seventh largest city in the state of Ohio and second largest city in Cuyahoga County (population in 2013 was 80,429). Parma Animal Shelter is responsible for the care and adoption of stray animals brought in by the City of Parma, Ohio Animal Control Officer, as well as public stray assistance and owner-relinquished animals (on a case by case basis). Over 600 animals per year are impounded by the city of Parma at this no-time limits shelter run solely by volunteers. The dog capacity is currently about 20 and cat capacity is approximately 40. All spaying, neutering, and medical care takes place at outside veterinarian offices prior to adoptions. Funding for the care of these animals comes from monthly fundraising events, sales, adoption fees, donations, and grants. The animals are cared for by 200 in-shelter volunteers working two shifts per day, seven days a week, and 61 event-only volunteers who help operate the fundraisers. Parma Animal Shelter became a 501(c)3 in December of 2003, but volunteers have been working together to fulfill this mission since the 1990’s.
