Homeward Trails Animal Rescue adopts pets to homes in Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland. Many of the dogs and puppies available for adoption are being cared for in foster homes in the DC area but many are still in rural animal shelters and can only be brought to the DC area once we have approved adoptive or foster homes for them. If you’re interested in adopting one of these animals, please review our and contact the volunteer whose email is listed on his or her page. Or attend a where you can meet a number of dogs at once and talk to Homeward Trails volunteers about adoption.
After completing your survey, you will receive a Guest Pass to meet pets of interest to you. With your Guest Pass, volunteers will introduce you to any pet you like so you can spend time getting to know one another. Whether you spend time in the pet’s suite, on our rooftop deck or in our play space, we encourage you to get to know your prospective new pet. When love strikes, simply let one of our volunteers know that you would like to proceed with adoption.

To save time, you can complete our online application and submit it before you come or download a copy to bring with you. If you see a pet you are interested in, be sure to note his or her name on your application. Did you know that over 1,000 people per hour run a search right here looking to adopt a pet? Pet adoption is quickly becoming the preferred way to find a new dog, puppy, cat or kitten. Best of all, there are so many benefits when you adopt a dog or adopt a cat over buying. For instance, pet adoption will almost always be more affordable than buying a puppy for sale from a breeder or finding a kitten for sale from a litter. There are more benefits as well. Since pets in rescues and shelters usually come from a home where the owners ran out of money, got divorced, or had to move, it's common to find that the dogs and cats on our website are already housetrained, good with kids, or do well with other pets. People are finding out that buying a puppy for sale from a breeder isn't all it's cracked up to be and the stress of training a puppy is too much these days. Best of all, rescues care for their animals, and the dogs and cats don't leave the organization without having their shots and being taken to the vet. That means less stress, and more savings! So what are you waiting for? Go find that perfect pet!
